Patterns of ecomorphological variation in the bats of western Madagascar: Comparisons among and between communities along a latitudinal gradient
نویسندگان
چکیده
The ecomorphology of 10 insectivorous bat species at three study zones in western Madagascar was examined using 567 specimens and based on 6 external, 11 cranial, 12 dental, and 11 wing measurements. The three study sites are located along a cline representing 11.61 of latitude. The southern most site has notable differences in vegetational and climatic regimes than the two more northern sites. Principal component analyses were conducted for each of the four datasets to examine the morphological space occupied by each species at the three sites. Most taxa showed clear intra-site separation and little inter-site variation. The exceptions included extensive morphological overlap in two taxa of Triaenops (cranial, dental, and wing), that have allopatric distributions, and between the sympatric Miniopterus manavi and Myotis goudoti (external, cranial, and dental). In the latter case, there was distinct separation in wing shape between these two taxa, which would allow them to exploit local habitats and prey in different manners. The only species that showed considerable inter-site variation was Hipposideros commersoni, which is sexually dimorphic, with individuals from the south being smaller than those in the north. r 2006 Deutsche Gesellschaft für Säugetierkunde. Clinal variation in body size and sexual dimorphism in an Indian fruit bat, Cynopterus sphinx (Chiroptera: Pteropodidae)
Geographic variation in body size and sexual dimorphism of the short-nosed fruit bat (Cynopterus sphinx ) was investigated in peninsular India. Bats were sampled at 12 localities along a 1,200 km latitudinal transect that paralleled the eastern flanks of the Western Ghats. The geographic pattern of variation in external morphology of C. sphinx conforms to the predictions of Bergmann’s Rule, as ...
متن کاملAltitudinal Genetic Variations Among the Fagus orientalis Lipsky Populations in Iran
Nuclear simple sequence repeats (nSSRs), together with 16 different enzyme loci, were used to analyzegenetic diversity and differentiation among beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) populations along two altitudinalgradients in Hyrcanian forests of Iran. Both enzymes and nSSR analyses revealed a high level ofgenetic diversity in natural populations of F. orientalis. The genetic div...
متن کاملEcosystem-Wide Morphological Structure of Leaf-Litter Ant Communities along a Tropical Latitudinal Gradient
General principles that shape community structure can be described based on a functional trait approach grounded on predictive models; increased attention has been paid to factors accounting for the functional diversity of species assemblages and its association with species richness along environmental gradients. We analyze here the interaction between leaf-litter ant species richness, the loc...
متن کاملStructure of Benthic Communities along the Taiwan Latitudinal Gradient
The distribution and the structure of benthic assemblages vary with latitude. However, few studies have described benthic communities along large latitudinal gradients, and patterns of variation are not fully understood. Taiwan, lying between 21.90°N and 25.30°N, is located at the center of the Philippine-Japan arc and lies at the northern margin of coral reef development. A wide range of habit...
متن کاملHistorical processes enhance patterns of diversity along latitudinal gradients.
One of the more vexing issues in ecology is how historical processes affect contemporary patterns of biodiversity. Accordingly, few models have been presented. Two corollary models (centre of origin, time-for-speciation) can be used to make quantitative predictions characterizing the tropical niche conservatism hypothesis and describe diversification as diffusion and subsequent cladogenesis of ...
